A Conditioned Eyelid Movement Is Not a Blink

چکیده
23 24 Based on kinematic properties and distinct substrates, there are different classes of 25 eyelid movement described as eyeblinks. We investigate whether the eyelid movements 26 made in response to a conditioned stimulus (CS) are a category of eyelid movements 27 distinct from blinks. Human subjects received 60 trials of classical eyelid conditioning 28 with a tone as the CS and electrical stimulation of the supraorbital branch of the 29 trigeminal nerve as the unconditioned stimulus (UCS). Before and after training, reflex 30 blinks were elicited with the UCS. The kinematics of conditioned responses (CRs) 31 differed significantly from those of reflex blinks. The slope of the amplitude-maximum 32 velocity function was steeper for reflex blinks than for CRs and reflex blink duration was 33 significantly shorter than CR duration. Unlike reflex blinks, for which maximum 34 velocity was independent of blink duration, the maximum velocity of CRs depended 35 upon CR duration. These quantitative and qualitative differences indicated that CRs were 36 a unique class of eyelid movements distinct from blinks and eyelid movements with 37 vertical saccadic gaze shifts. 38

متن کاملAdaptive Timing of Motor Output in the Mouse: The Role of Movement Oscillations in Eyelid Conditioning
To survive, animals must learn to control their movements with millisecond-level precision, and adjust the kinematics if conditions, or task requirements, change. Here, we examine adaptive timing of motor output in mice, using a simple eyelid conditioning task. Mice were trained to blink in response to a light stimulus that was always followed by a corneal air-puff at a constant time interval. ...
متن کاملEyelid movements during blinking in patients with Parkinson's disease.
We examined eyelid movements during spontaneous, voluntary, and trigeminal reflex blinks in 16 patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease (PD) off medication and 14 controls. Voluntary and reflex blink amplitudes tended to be smaller than normal for PD patients, whereas eyelid kinematics (amplitude-maximum velocity relationship) for all three blink types were normal. Spontaneous blink r...
متن کاملRelative contributions of eyelid and eye-retraction motor systems to reflex and classically conditioned blink responses in the rabbit.
Early compensatory mechanisms between eyelid and eye-retraction motor systems following selective nerve and/or muscle lesions were studied in behaving rabbits. Reflex and conditioned eyelid responses were recorded in 1). controls and following 2). facial nerve section, 3). retractor bulbi muscle removal, and 4). facial nerve section and retractor bulbi muscle removal. Animals were classically c...

37 Reflex blinks provide a model system for investigating motor learning in normal and 38 pathological states. We investigated whether high frequency stimulation of the supraor39 bital branch of the trigeminal nerve before the R2 blink component (HFS-B) decreases 40 reflex blink gain in alert rats. As with humans (Mao and Evinger 2001), HFS-B signifi41 cantly reduced blink size in the first hou...
